Dementia Friendly Practices

Approximately 3000 people living in Barnsley suffer with dementia. We recognise that Barnsley must do more to support dementia patients and those who care for them.

Working closely with Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group we have been responsible for helping practices to introduce new measures to deliver dementia friendly GP services throughout the Barnsley borough.

All local practices are registered Dementia Friends – an initiative led by the Alzheimer’s Society and each practice has a Dementia Champion. We will continue to work with our Champions, helping to deliver a joined up approach to supporting individuals with dementia care needs. As part of this joined up approach we work closely with dementia leads at Barnsley Hospital, South & West Yorkshire Foundation Trust’s memory team and Barnsley Dementia Action Alliance.

Live Well Barnsley

People in Barnsley who have care or support needs are being helped to stay well, active and independent with a new online health and wellbeing service. Live Well Barnsley has officially launched and will give people in the borough access to a range of information and services, all in one place.

The new directory has been developed by Barnsley Council and its partners, and provides information about health, wellbeing, care and support services. It allows people to access a range of topics from getting help and adaptations in their home, learning new skills and joining local groups. There is also help and guidance for carers.

There are currently over five hundred easy-to-access services on the site, bringing together a range of information that enables people to live healthier and independent lives.
