What is the Barnsley Healthcare Federation?

Over past five years, the number of GP consultations has increased nationally by 15%. In many areas of the UK there is an acute shortage of healthcare professionals. According to recently released statistics nearly 12% of GP positions are currently vacant.

Barnsley is no exception and the Federation was created to ensure that the town benefited from a healthcare provision which not only met the needs of providing primary and social care today, but laid the foundations to ensure Barnsley was equipped to meet future challenges.

Barnsley Healthcare Federation is a not-for-profit community interest company. Funds are reinvested directly into the services provided, enabling the Federation to provide a multi-disciplinary primary care workforce which draws upon the skills and knowledge held by healthcare professionals across Barnsley.

The Federation is made up of 24 member GP practices which are independently managed but share a common purpose to enhance the level of primary care support available within the borough.

How does the Federation work?

Across England, NHS contracts are awarded by NHS England and the local clinical commissioning group (CCG). In order to apply for such contracts, any service provider must have its own legal entity and comply with different rules and regulations, which can place a significant administrative burden upon individual practices.

The Federation enables individual member practices to compete more effectively when tendering for services, whilst also providing clinical governance, designed to ensure that levels of patient care are consistent across all member practices.

It is our aim to equip the borough with the skills, knowledge and expertise to provide a cohesive and sustainable primary and social care model, designed to enhance patient experiences.

Members of the Barnsley Healthcare Federation share a common purpose and goal, enabling publicly-funded services to develop new services, improve efficiency, whilst also providing greater levels of accountability.
