Barnsley’s i-HEART service has secured a place on the shortlist of one of the UK’s most respected and influential healthcare awards after being recognised for its innovative work which helped to transform the way in which patients can access GP and Nurse appointments when their Practice is closed.
i-HEART was chosen from more than 1500 hopefuls to secure a place on the shortlist of the highly coveted HSJ Awards after impressing senior figures from across the healthcare sector with its innovative delivery approach. Pioneered by Barnsley Healthcare Federation the service has successfully helped to reduce waiting times, enabling patients registered with a Barnsley-based GP practice to access same day appointments during evenings and weekends.
The service was launched following extensive patient consultation, helping patients to access the right medical help at the right time. Since the service launched, i-HEART has helped to reduce admissions to the town’s oversubscribed accident and emergency department by more than 100 patients per week, with more than 25,000 patients benefitting from the service during the past twelve months.
The service provides telephone and email support to individuals registered with a Barnsley-based GP practice, as well as access to face-to-face appointments with GPs and Nurses during evening and weekends. 95% of patients rate the service as being ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’.
After securing a highly sought after place on the shortlist, representatives from i-HEART will head to London to deliver a presentation to members of the judging panel , before finding out whether they have been successful at a special awards ceremony which will take place at the 02 arena in November.
Jim Logan, Chief Executive, Barnsley Healthcare Federation said:
